A special group of community volunteers was recognized at the Roosevelt City Council Meeting on Tuesday, January 19. The Veterans Memorial Committee has been selflessly serving the Roosevelt area for 25 years.

Cemetery Sexton Drew Eschler shared the following committee history:

A group of Roosevelt City Citizens known as the “Veterans Memorial Committee” was formed and money was raised by donations from the community to get the 50 flag poles that border the Roosvelt City Cemetery, and purchase ropes, hardware, paint, and flags. This volunteer group, along with generous donations of equipment, manpower, and time from Moon Lake Electric, Windriver Wireless, RBS, and other businesses, erected the poles and the project was dedicated in May of 1996.

Current members of the Veterans Memorial Committee are Dean Brough, Steve Yack, Gary Rohrer, Keith Hansen, Beverly Hansen, Larry Abplanalp, Chandler Fisher, and Terry Scholes. These people volunteer time, money, and elbow grease to make sure that the 50 flags are put up around the Roosevelt City Cemetery on days that a veteran is buried. To date, in the 25 years since the dedication, there have been 222 veterans laid to rest, with 50 United States flags and the flags of all 50 states flying over their graves on the day they were buried. That is the initial intention of the project. It was for the veterans. The committee has also raised and lowered the flags on holidays such as the Fourth of July, Flag Day, Veterans Day, the three-day Memorial Day weekend, and other days as deemed fit by the committee.

During the 25 years, there have been instances of theft of flags, bent flag poles, repainting of poles, cleaning of flags, replacing of flags, and other usual maintenance required. These have all been taken care of by the committee and donations.

Roosevelt City wishes to express its overwhelming gratitude to this wonderful group of community volunteers for their service to our veterans. We are proud of the work they have done and grateful to have them in our City.
